TARGET: £100,000
SAILI (The South African Improved Learning Initiative) is a registered charity in South Africa whose vision for high quality education for all children to redress past inequalities is underpinned by 2 key programmes:
-
Directing academic talent into working parts of our school system through a scholarship programme.
-
Improving the systemic quality of teaching and learning in classrooms in low and no fee public schools through a blended learning solution called Huddle that scaffolds and empowers both teachers and learners.
The South African Education system is in crisis - for every 100 learners entering the school only 37 pass their final year matric exams, and only 4 get a degree. The poor quality of teacher instruction, shrinking budgets to fund teaching posts (resulting in teacher scarcity) and high costs to build and sustain new schools, in the context of an exploding youth population, are factors that have contributed to South Africa’s poor education outcomes.
Huddle’s “one to many” blended learning model seeks to address these systemic issues.
Imagine the best teachers in South Africa (whom Huddle refer to as the ‘Springbok’ teaching team) planning, designing and delivering extremely rigorous, pre-recorded curriculum aligned lessons (underpinned by proven pedagogy) to millions of learners via the Huddle platform. These lessons are accessed by learners through laptops in internet enabled classrooms and corresponding workbooks which are couriered onsite. Teachers and or blended learning facilitators are incentivised and supported to change their practice from “chalk and talk” or “the telling method” where learners mostly copy content off a board to being practitioners who focus on checking if learning is happening and on “closing the learning gaps”. In classes where learners do not have access to personal devices, lessons are projected and teachers are prompted to check the understanding of learners throughout. Workbooks accompany projected lessons to increase the rigor and engagement of the lessons.
