PROMOTING PEACE BUILDING IN CONFLICT AND POST CONFLICT SOCIETIES THROUGH YOGA, MEDITATION AND THE ARTS.
The AZAHAR Foundation works in post-conflict communities providing free yoga classes and yoga teacher training. Their aim is to break cycles of violence, and focus on the recovery and rehabilitation of individuals, and the communities in which they live.
AZAHAR Foundation has worked in post-conflict societies such as Cambodia, Rwanda and Colombia for more than a decade. We’ve structured programs that are deeply rooted in education, using creative methodologies that promote peacebuilding at individual and community levels. We’ve contributed to empowering the victims of violence to heal so that they can facilitate the healing of communities and societies at large.
In a nutshell, AZAHAR Foundation has benefited communities in more than 7 countries including Ukraine, Syria, Lebanon, Ivory Coast, Colombia, Cambodia and Rwanda. The foundation has organised more than 5 annual peace camps with emphasis on non-violent communication, women’s empowerment, authentic leadership, and other community development skills. The organisation has also sponsored 21 scholarship recipients from vulnerable communities to graduate from international yoga teacher trainings and they’re currently serving uplifting mindfulness practices with more than 2,500 students per year.
To restore harmony, we must also work to prevent conflict to arising in the first place. We are all desperate to understand how to heal division and hatred. AZAHAR Foundation believes that the key to slowing down the nefarious effects of polarisation in our communities is to facilitate constructive shifts in our attitudes and actions through the power of yoga, meditation, and the arts.
